This document discusses food and drug interactions and provides examples. It notes that food can make drugs less or more effective, or cause harmful effects in the body. Grapes or grape juice can interact with statin drugs like atorvastatin and lovastatin by blocking enzymes in the liver that break down the statins, causing more of the drugs to enter the body and potentially lead to side effects like muscle breakdown or liver damage. The document also gives examples of interactions between vitamin K and the blood thinner warfarin, calcium and anti-seizure medications, and liquorice with the heart drug digoxin. It recommends establishing dietary systems to avoid interacting foods and educating patients to prevent these interactions.

2. INTRODUCTION :-
A food drug interaction is a situation when an active chemicals
in a drug reacts to the nutrients and food item and cause
less effective then expected
More effective then expected
May cause the effect in the body that could be extremely
harmful
to our body
Food is either restricted or provided at a time before or after
the medication has been given to prevent any Food-Drug
interaction.
4. Food and Drugs that do not work well
together
Grapes /grapes juice with cholesterol lowering Drugs
Eg :- Atorvastatin's ,Lovastatin's
These statins drugs are broken down in liver by enzyme. The
grapes/grapes juice can block the action of these enzymes
,which would cause the more of statins to enter the body than
intended
6. Side effects cause by the interaction of
statins and grapes
Muscle breakdown
Liver damage
Increased blood sugar
Neurological side effects
Digestive problems
Therefor grapes juice are not offered / given to the patents
which are using statins
7. Another examples of food and drug intrection
Vitamin K (increased the clotting factor ) with Warfarin
( thin the blood)
Calcium with the anti seizures drugs (e.g. phenytoin
sodium)
Liquorice with digoxin ( used to treat heart failure and
irregular heartbeats disorder )
9. How to avoid food drugs interactions
By establishing an system dietary is aware to what food to
avoid at the time of medication
Representative should be educated on potential food drug
interactions
Discuss food preferences and alternative of the food that
are on menu.
Read food labels
