Introduction to a Royal Society of the Arts Fellowship event on food culture and food systems in Coventry, 13 November 2018 held at Coventry University. We made vegetable summer rolls and shared hummus made by Arabian Bites community caf辿 and delicious sourdough bread from Proof Bakery that trains and assists migrants in Coventry. We considered how a Kitchen Incubator might help others become involved in making a selling food locally. Get in touch if you would like to know more.

- #2: Sharing food is fun its a social activity. Weve been preparing fresh vegetable summer rolls in rice paper with edible ink messages that convey both the need for and our love of food.
- #3: We live in the 5th richest economy in the world yet in our city there is an increasing need for food banks, especially among young families. At the same time we see wide health gaps between those who experience deprivation in various forms, including food insecurity and those who grow up and live in more affluent parts of Coventry. These social inequalities drive much of the poor health we hear so much about nowadays including type 2 diabetes, strongly linked to being overweight. Improving access to fruit and vegetables can potentially go some way to changing both of the problems but its only part of the solution.
- #4: This is a snapshot of emergency food provision across the city.
- #5: There are efforts to improve takeaway options and also ensure that young families get access to healthier food needed. Tackling multiple strands, or a taking systems approach is one way forward and has been highlighted by the Director of Public Health in Coventry.
- #6: These are some of the fabulous ways food is being grown, sold and prepared that enable people to help each other and find ways to improve their social connections and the food they eat. Tonight we are eating hummus supplied by Arabian Bites, bread baked by Proof Bakery and we are going to hear about the possibility of establishing a Kitchen Incubator. Examples elsewhere sometimes start out on a small scale to help food start-ups operate (Proof Bakery is a local example). On a larger scale, commercial premises are rented or acquired and food hygiene standards are met in order to help small food traders or cooperatives operate. Sally Arkley proposes exploring grant funding initiatives do this in Coventry city centre.
- #7: What can the RSA do to help support this new initiative? It fits well with Coventrys Food Charter launched in 2016 and could be an excellent opportunity as we lead up to the City of Culture 2021 to promote the diversity of food on offer in Coventry.
