The author discovered that their vet charged $70 for a 50-pill prescription of Tramadol for their dog, while the same prescription could be purchased online from Petmeds Express for $24, a 600% markup. Research on Petmeds Express found it to be a profitable company with room for growth and paying a 5.3% dividend yield. WAGGING THE INVESTOR'S TAIL
1. WAGGING THE
INVESTOR’S TAIL ?
This isn't personal. It's strictly business.
This is about veterinaries, your pet’s medications and how to fetch a
tidy profit bypassing your vet and betting on online pet pharmacies.
I’m willing to go the mattresses on this one because my local vet just
charged me $70 to re-fill a 50-pill Tramadol prescription for my dog.
Like most pet owners, I didn’t think twice about paying the fee. I just
grabbed the pills and headed home. It wasn’t until the next day that I
started digging around and began to snarl and growl a little!
A quick Google search led me to Petmeds Express where 100 pills of the
exact same dosage could have been had for $24. My own vet’s Norman
Rockwell image immediately flew out the window on the wings of her 600%
markup. If Petmeds Express could undercut the local vet by that much
and still make money, I reasoned, then maybe this was a business I
should know more about.
The Motley Fool backed me up. In May of this year Bob Clura wrote, "if
you're looking for a company in a gold mine of a business with lots of
room for growth and a compelling dividend, look no further than
PetMeds."
“Over the past four years,” Clura continued, “the company has increased
its dividend by about 14% compounded annually. At its current level,
PetMeds provides a hefty 5.3% dividend yield, which means investors are
getting their fair share of cash flow.”
Look, I don’t want my local vet sending her version of Lucca Brasi to
my door but I will admit that I was steamed that my pup’s pain
medication had been marked-up 600%. It was an offer that I should have
refused.
I also remembered that Lucca Brasi ended up swimming with the fishes. I
decided that if I was going to swim with anything, I’d like it to be
the dollars I’d save by buying my pet’s meds online and from getting a
nice dividend from Petmeds Express.
I think it was Vito Corleone who said that lawyers can steal more money
with a briefcase than 100 men with guns. The veterinary community, it
seems to me, is inching dangerously closer to briefcase territory with
their prescription prices.
I also figured that sooner or later more folks like myself would come
to the same conclusion and start buying their pet’s meds online.
When they do, I want to cash in.
