The Philippine education system was patterned after systems in Spain and the United States. It follows a 6-4-4 structure of 6 years of primary school, 4 years of secondary school, and 4 years of higher education. Primary education is compulsory and administered by the Department of Education. The Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, also known as the K to 12 Program, extended basic education from 10 to 12 years through the addition of 2 years of senior high school.
