These "Fracture" pieces were made for the "back to nature Showdown" currently being held by Saatchi online. Approaching this from a conceptual perspective, one of the most fundamental things I could think of was "Rock"... having settled on the subject, I first took some photographs of a rock face that I found interesting to develop the idea of naturally occurring art. As I am one of those people who can stare for hours at a piece of twig or stare lovingly at a rock - I thought I would explore our ability to appreciate natural phenomenon. This piece is showing a section of the 16 grid. I wanted to have as little control over the resulting compositions as possible and these sections are the end result, and the aim of the project. Other than cutting out sections along the fractures to give interesting shapes, I haven't composed any of this work - rather... as it developed, I devised a system of grids, placing the original samples randomly, then started rotating sections of the grid to overlay other grids underneath and then applying layer filters. I haven't changed the colours at all - other than selecting the filters... or composed them in any way, other than setting up the grid.
