Confucius' father, Shu Liang, was a decorated soldier who was appointed as mayor of a small town. He had nine daughters with his first wife and sought a son to inherit his legacy. His second wife gave birth to a son with a limp. However, according to historian Sima Qian, Confucius was actually born to one of his father's mistresses while Shu Liang was away on business. Confucius later wrote that those with filial piety, or respect for parents and others, are less likely to disrupt organizational harmony.
