What	is	a	magazine?

In	1731	the	word	¡°magazine¡±	appeared
when	The	Gentleman¡¯s	Magazine	was
?rst	published.

It	comes	from	an	Arabic	word	that
means	¡°warehouse¡±	¨C	a	place	where
large	quanIIes	of	various	things	are
stored.

Today, I	would	describe	a	magazine	as:
A	collec4on	of	aggregated	content	that
has	been	cra9ed	for	a	cul4vated,
similar-minded	audience.
A	liJle	magazine	history:

Readers	love	print	magazines.
(What	they	don¡¯t	love	is	print	and	paper	waste).
StaIsIcs	show	they	are	not	(yet)	super	fans	of	digital
magazines.	And	when	they	do	enjoy	them,	many	say
it¡¯s	because	they	loved	the	print	ediIon	?rst.

Every	month
15%	read	5	or
more	printed
magazines
So	what	¡°died¡±,	anyway?
Print	newspapers,	books,	and	magazines	saw	a	decline	in	print
quanIIes	due	to	the	ease	of	digital	content	delivery	to
consumers,	and	the	availability	of	free	wi?.

PrinIng	is	expensive.	So	is	distribuIon.
Where	publishers	are
?nding	cost	savings	in
niche	(or	custom)
publishing	is	in
distribuIon,	by	?nding
ways	to	bypass	costly
tradiIonal	newsstand
and	postal	services,	and
reduce	freight	costs.

?? Food	and	Drink	(LCBO)
?? Now	Magazine	(free	local)
That¡¯s	bad	news	for	big	publishers.
Publishers	puong	magazines	on	the	newsstand
place	2	copies	for	each	copy	they	want	sold.

To	sell	100,000	copies	on	the	newsstand,
publishers	will	print	and	ship	200,000	copies.

At	a	cost	of	$1	a	copy,	(plus	freight	across	the
country),	you	can	see	how	newsstand	distribuIon
can	be	prohibiIve.
But,	small	is	big.
AlternaIve	means	of	print	distribuIon	are	allowing	publishers
to	reach	new	audiences	using	shorter	print	runs.

?? Less	waste
?? Reduced	freight
?? More	control

No!

development	of	new	technology	on	their

And,	publishers	making	digital	magazines	more
accessible	to	new	audiences	makes	them	more
appealing.
