Editor's Notes

  • #3: Hello Im Steve and Im here to tell you about DBVu who provide centralised database monitoring and performance analytics, which is like Google Analytics but for databases and with helpful advice when issues are found. The information is displayed graphically, which is suitable for management with drill down info more suited to technical users. So DBVu provides automated remote DBA services
  • #4: It works by DBVu polling a simple an open source script on the customers public facing web server, which then establishes a secure SSL connection back to DBVu and pulls over all the required configuration data, connects to the internal databases and sends an XML file back to DBVu.The client requires zero maintenance and is very resource efficient.
  • #5: Start-ups generally have developers who know how to install a database, but dont have a DBAWeb application will have scripts to set-up the database in a generic way that will work on anythingAs the system load increases with users, generally the database will be the first thing to go wrongDBVu monitors the database and shows issues before they become problems
  • #6: With DBVu as issues occur they can be fixed before they cause problems to the applicationSo as user load grows, the database scales with them
  • #7: Initially DBVu is supporting MySQL as its the most commonly used database and MySQL know its being used in at least 11m sites worldwide, of which around 30% are start-up and SME who wont have DBAs.
  • #8: Theres quite a few competitors but they are either extremely complex to install like MySQL Enterprise and their output is designed for DBAs or they only give basic data about the database (like whether its running or not).
  • #9: DBVu has adopted the freemium model, whereby every customer gets 30 days of full service and then if they dont pay they get reduced polling and less drill-down info. There will also be a consultancy referral system so that if a customer needs help, then they are able to contact a consultancy through the site and grant them read-only access to their data.DBVu is also targeting hosting companies and who can bundle or resell the service to their MySQL hosted customers.
  • #10: The real heart of the team is Andy who has over 20 years experience building database based systems and each timehas built amonitoring system around it and its that experience which is going into DBVu.
  • #11: In future we will continue supporting more features of MySQL and variants, weve already been asked to support Postgres and MS SQL and will look at the plethora of NoSQL databases when they stabilise. We will also add an API so 3rd party services can push their database analytics to DBVu
  • #12: Many thanks and any questions
