Costa Rica has a population of over 4.5 million people who are mostly Roman Catholic. The economy has experienced real GDP growth of around 3.6% annually with per capita income around $10,500. Costa Rica was the first country in Central America to have a female president, Laura Chinchilla, who served from 2010 to 2014. The country has pursued policies promoting gender equality in education and empowerment programs for women.
