washed ashore on a Mexican beach in
October 2012. Its biological name is
Regalecus glesne, or king of herrings,
and its the longest bony fish in the
world. It resides at depths ranging from
600 to 3,000 feet and rarely comes up
to the surface, which is why sightings
are rare. Its considered to be a prime
candidate for the origin of the legends
of the sea serpent.
