Electronic rock, also known as synth rock, electrorock or digital rock, uses electronic instruments to create rock music. It has been highly dependent on technological developments like the invention of the synthesizer in the late 1960s and the development of MIDI and computer technology. In the late 1960s, rock bands began using early electronic instruments like the Theremin and Mellotron to supplement their sound, and by the 1970s the Moog synthesizer dominated progressive rock. Forms of basic synth rock emerged after punk rock, increasingly using new digital technology to replace other instruments.
