Edinburgh Global Partnerships Cameroon Project 2009
Who? Edinburgh Global Partnerships (EGP) is a student-run organisation based in the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a registered charity (no.SC018757) that has been running for 17 years, funding and sending volunteers to development projects across the less developed world.
What? EGP forms partnerships with local non-governmental organizations (NGO). It supports small scale, grass roots, sustainable development projects aiming to help local communities achieve their own development goals. EGP volunteers raise the funds for the project, before going out and working alongside the local community. By living and working alongside the local community, EGP aims to promote cultural awareness and understanding, and form lasting international partnerships with local communities.
3 Aims EGP has 3 aims: To support community lead initiatives, working together with people to help them achieve their goals for development. To allow students to develop new skills and a wider perspective on the world we live in. To promote international understanding through projects that are focused on building friendship, trust and respect between EGP volunteers and people across the world.
Cameroon
EGP Cameroon 2009! The project that I coordinated in Cameroon is ran this summer for 9 weeks in the small rural village of Bamendjing, in the western province of Cameroon. The project consisted of the construction of a Trade and Development Centre. The construction was proposed and supported by the local community, and aims to give support to small scale agricultural suppliers, by giving them a place to store, organize and sell their produce in between market days (Yenkosi) and giving them the opportunity to promote their activities. The centre will also be used by other members of the community, to tackle the social problems of the area, including HIV/AIDs.
How? The budget for this trade and development centre was over £8300 This budget consisted of the direct costs of the construction, including the materials, and local labour. (The EGP volunteers covered all personal costs themselves, such as flights, visas, vaccinations, food and accommodation.) We are organized several fundraising events in Edinburgh, including music and band nights, social events, a food stall in our union, and we also ran the 2009 Edinburgh Meadows marathon!

Your Help! Unfortunately, due to the changing exchange rates and falling of the pound, we ran out of money! Luckily, we did finish the project, however we had to get a loan from the EGP Central fund. So…I am looking for your financial support of this project! Donations of any sum will be much, much appreciated! If desired arrangements can also be made for donors to monitor the progress of the project, and interact with the community involved via internet or phone 
Thanks so much for your time!  Here are a few additional links: Edinburgh Global Partnerships: http://egp.eusa.ed.ac.uk/ EGP Cameroon 2009 http://egp.eusa.ed.ac.uk/2009Cameroon.htm Just Giving EGP Cameroon http://www.justgiving.co.uk/egpcameroon
