De gerund is een werkwoord met ing erachter geschreven. Vaak
als onderwerp van een zin:

       Smoking is not allowed. Roken is verboden.
       Watching tv is all I do. Tv-kijken is alles wat ik doe.


De gerund wordt ook gebruikt na voorzetsels. Zoals of, off, at,
without, for, by, before, forward:

       He left without paying. Hij vertrok zonder te betalen.

Als regel komt de gerund ook na de werkwoorden:
to avoid, to enjoy, to fancy, to finish, to give, to go on, to keep,
to mind, to quit en to suggest.

Meestal ook na de werkwoorden: to stop, to like, to love en to
hate.

De gerund wordt ook gebruikt na de uitdrukkingen:

Its no good           =Het heeft geen zin
Its no use            =Het heeft geen zin
Cant/couldnt help    =moeten
Cant/couldnt stand   =kan er niet tegen

We cant help laughing about it.
They couldnt stand seeing us celebrate our victory.
