Global Foam Company signs an agreement to produce expanded polystyrene (EPS) signs for a customer. EPS is an economical material that allows for exciting sign designs. It is lightweight, weather resistant, and easy to cut into complex shapes using CNC machines. The company has the capability to incorporate high density urethane into signs for sharper details and can provide installation instructions and referrals for sign installation.
3. EPS Signs are Economical and Enable Exciting Design Possibilities What is EPS/HDU and how is it used? Global Foam’s Unique Capabilities Applications for EPS Signs Installation Options and Ideas How to get Started
5. What is EPS? EPS is Expanded bead polystyrene, small white beads molded (like packing for appliances) EPS comes in various densities lb/cu ft ¾ lb, 1 lb is 90% of what we use, 1.5, 2.0, 3, and 4 lb ¾ lb usually for packaging, 1lb or 1.5 lb for shapes or insulation Extruded Polystrene is the opened cell blue, pink, yellow board that is typically 1 – 3 in thick 4 ft x 8 ft sheets. We cut that also (1.7 lb density) We receive the EPS billets in a 4 ft x 4 ft x 8 ft block to start. This does not limit the size of what we produce.
7. Why use EPS? EPS is the cheapest large volume material. Further saving on bulk items by use of wood framing or hollowing structures Insulation over other materials such as wood, steel, and concrete. Does not deteriorate with weathering when covered. No rust or rot. Light weight and easy to handle or fix in place.
9. What is HDU and how is it used? HDU stands for High Density Urethane. HDU that we use is typically 15# density and is a ridged foam we can only cut with routers HDU is a harder denser material than EPS but it allows for sharper details on smaller letters and designs HDU is much more expensive than EPS but requires only a light coating. We use HDU when requested or in portions of a sign where it is needed.
10. Fabrication is done in several steps We start with CAD geometry for all the features and shapes. The EPS is cut by CNC machines not unlike a regular machine shop. We assemble all the pieces and then apply a hard plastic shell before spraying the final textured finish (Optional textures) We also make the proper cutouts for pvc pipes or slots for 4 x 4 posts. Sometimes we make the sign to go over top of an existing frame or sign. If needed wood or other materials can be placed inside the sign to improve mounting strength. (typical for flat wall mounted signs) The last steps is applying a basic exterior house paint that matches your specified colors as close as possible.
12. Installation explanations and ideas We do not install sign, however an installer can be referred or contacted Most signs are light weight and easy to install (4 ft x 8 ft x 12 in sign weighs approx 150 lbs) Most cities require permits and we can provide you with the drawing for your application For most monument signs, 2 posts or poles set in concrete are adequate. (see next page illustrations)
15. Sign Blocks Wet cement for footer Use Sign to Align pole in wet cement, Remove blocks when cement sets and slide sign down. Landscape around bottom of sign to cover any gap & to keep mowers away. Align Horiz & Vert
17. Sign Alternative: Have Frame with cross members already set in place Sign has a slot large enough to slide over frame. Advantage, stronger frame and then easier to mount other face pieces into frame.
19. How to get Started Please provide either a hand sketch with 3 views, A cad File, or a printed drawing of your shape.
