Bangladesh has a population of 152.5 million people living in an area of 144,000 square kilometers, resulting in a very high population density of 996 people per square kilometer. The country has limited renewable water resources of 8,089 cubic meters per person and access to sanitation and safe water supply for around half and three-quarters of the population respectively. The Global Water Partnership South Asia works to address Bangladesh's water challenges and was established in 1998.
