National Deaf Childrens Society provides guide to help parents of children
with glue ear
Glue ear is one of the most common childhood illnesses. 80% of children will
experience glue ear before the age of 10. The National Deaf Childrens Society is
aware of this prevalent illness and offers a free resource to help parents better
understand their childs illness and get suitably informed on how to help their child.
Glue ear occurs when the middle ear becomes blocked with fluid, making it
increasingly harder for sound to pass through. Children living with glue ear will
experience temporary deafness, a change in behaviour, and a generally diminished
quality of life.
Some primary signs of glue ear include changes in behaviour, becoming tired and
frustrated, a lack of concentration, preferring to play alone and not responding when
called. These signs are often mistaken with rudeness or stubbornness; an unfair
misunderstanding.
The National Deaf Childrens Society works to break down barriers for deaf children,
including those experiencing deafness from the side effects of glue ear. A free,
downloadable guide is available on the organisations website as a reference for
parents. The pack includes detailed information on glue ear, causes and conditions
that influence the illness and how to treat glue ear.
There are multiple treatment options including, but not limited to, grommets and
hearing aids. A GP will be able to help parents decide what option is best for them.
If glue ear is left untreated, this could lead to long term medical complications and
permanent deafness. Parents who are recognizing side effects of glue ear in their
children should seek immediate treatment, with regard to the National Deaf
Childrens Societys parent guide pack.
