Google was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Stanford PhD candidates. They developed a new technique for searching the vast information on the internet, represented by the large number "googol", which is 1 followed by 100 zeros. Google provides many search tools and services beyond basic web searches, including searches of blogs, books, maps, local information and more specialized searches of finance, shopping, video, images, news, patents and scholarly works. An account may be needed to use some of Google's products and services.
