Model: Read to Find Key Events Purpose: Read paragraphs 7-8 of to find out what happens when Black Beauty learns to wear a bit and bridle. Annotate! Take margin notes as you identify key events and summarize the story. (TE p. 174)
Guided Practice Purpose: Read paragraphs 1-3 to find out what happens when Black Beauty is four years old. Annotate! Take margin notes as you identify key events and summarize the story. (TE p. 170)
Guided Practice Purpose: Read paragraphs 9-10 of My Breaking In to find out what happens to Black Beauty next. Annotate! Take margin notes as you identify key events and summarize the story.
Guided Practice What does Black Beauty mean when he says, So you see this breaking in is a great thing? What is the first thing that Black Beauty has to get used to? How does he feel about it? What details support your answer? What is the next think master does to break the horse in?
Reread and Write to Apply Understanding Please reread paragraphs 3-4. Write a paragraph summarizing Black Beautys point of view about being broken in.
