WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT
THE VIDEO?
HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR
FAMILY FROM CIGARETTE SMOKE?
CIGARETTE
is a narrow cylinder containing
burnable material, typically
tobacco, that is rolled in thin paper
for smoking. It is one example of a
gateway drug.
CIGARETTE
TOBACCO LEAF
Cigarette is one example
of a gateway drug.
GATEWAY DRUGS
are legal drugs such as cigarettes and
alcohol that a non-drug user might
try, which can lead him/her to more
dangerous drugs such as marijuana
and shabu.
CHEMICALS IN A CIGARETTE
1.Nicotine 4. Benzene
2.Carbon monoxide 5. Arsenic
3.Tar 6. Formaldehyde
NICOTINE
a highly addictive
chemical compound
present in a tobacco plant
CARBON MONOXIDE
an odorless, colorless gas. It
is not added to tobacco but is
formed when tobacco is
burned completely.
TAR
When tobacco is burned, it creates a toxic
smoke called tar. It is a sticky black
chemical substance that can gather inside
the lungs and lead to lung cancer,
emphysema, and other lung problems.
BENZENE
It is released in the smoke when
tobacco is burned. Benzene is a
carcinogen which means it can
cause cancer.
ARSENIC
is commonly used in rat poison.
Arsenic finds its way into cigarette
smoke through some of the
pesticides that are used in tobacco
farming.
FORMALDEHYDE
is also called formaline, is an
embalming fluid used to preserve
dead bodies. It can also preserve
things such as food, medicine, skin
care,etc.
MAINSTREAM SMOKE
REFERS SPECIFICALLY TO THE SMOKE
THAT A SMOKER DIRECTLY INHALES
SIDESTREAM SMOKE
the smoke that comes out of the
lighted end of a cigarette or pipe. This
is also called second-hand smoke or
environmental tobacco smoke. This is
more dangerous than mainstream
smoke.
THIRD-HAND SMOKE
smoke left for a long time on sofa, beddings,
pillow and other objects. This is also called
residual tobacco smoke (RTS). It settles along
with dust and can last for months. This smoke
still contains harmful chemicals and
carcinogens.
Inhaling mainstream smoke increases the
risk of lung cancer and may increase the risk
of other types of cancers.
Second-hand and third-hand smoke are
also harmful and are inhaled by non-smokers
putting them at risk of acquiring cancer also.
These two types of cigarette smoke can also go
into the body through the skin.
SHORT-TERM EFFECTS
STRESS
A feeling of emotional or physical tension
RAPID HEART RATE
is when your heart is beating faster than normal
PERSISTENT COUGH
A cough that persists for a period of 8 weeks or
longer
BREATHING DIFFICULTY
A person who is having difficulty breathing feels short of breath,
has trouble inhaling and exhaling or feels as though he/she cannot
get enough oxygen
HALITOSIS OR BAD BREATH
An unpleasant smell coming from the
mouth
SINUSITIS
Inflammation of the sinuses that can cause them to
get blocked and filled with fluid
INCREASED PHLEGM PRODUCTION
overproduction of mucus
STOMACH PROBLEMS
health problems that occurs in the digestive
tract
WEAK PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE
The lack of bodily or muscular strength or
vitality
LONG-TERM EFFECTS
ASTHMA
A respiratory condition marked by spasms in the
bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing
ATHEROSCLEROSIS
The thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by
a buildup of plaque in the inner lining of the artery
THROMBOSIS
Occurs when blood clots block veins or arteries
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
A type of disease that affects the heart or blood
vessels
CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASES
Refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow
blockage and breathing-related problems
CANCER (OF THE MOUTH, THROAT, SKIN, LUNGS AND OTHER BODY PARTS)
Disease in which some of the body’s cells grow
uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body
CANCER
HYPERTENSION
Another name for high blood pressure
HEART ATTACK
Also called myocardial infarction, happens when
a part of the muscle does not get enough blood
STROKE
If someone has a stroke, a blood vessel in their brain bursts or becomes
blocked, which may kill them or make them unable to move one side of
their body
1.WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE SHORT-TERM
AND LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF SMOKING?
2.WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE THE
NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON HEALTH CAUSED BY
CIGARETTE SMOKING?
