12. HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR
FAMILY FROM CIGARETTE SMOKE?
13. CIGARETTE
is a narrow cylinder containing
burnable material, typically
tobacco, that is rolled in thin paper
for smoking. It is one example of a
gateway drug.
17. GATEWAY DRUGS
are legal drugs such as cigarettes and
alcohol that a non-drug user might
try, which can lead him/her to more
dangerous drugs such as marijuana
and shabu.
18. CHEMICALS IN A CIGARETTE
1.Nicotine 4. Benzene
2.Carbon monoxide 5. Arsenic
3.Tar 6. Formaldehyde
20. CARBON MONOXIDE
an odorless, colorless gas. It
is not added to tobacco but is
formed when tobacco is
burned completely.
21. TAR
When tobacco is burned, it creates a toxic
smoke called tar. It is a sticky black
chemical substance that can gather inside
the lungs and lead to lung cancer,
emphysema, and other lung problems.
22. BENZENE
It is released in the smoke when
tobacco is burned. Benzene is a
carcinogen which means it can
cause cancer.
23. ARSENIC
is commonly used in rat poison.
Arsenic finds its way into cigarette
smoke through some of the
pesticides that are used in tobacco
farming.
24. FORMALDEHYDE
is also called formaline, is an
embalming fluid used to preserve
dead bodies. It can also preserve
things such as food, medicine, skin
care,etc.
26. SIDESTREAM SMOKE
the smoke that comes out of the
lighted end of a cigarette or pipe. This
is also called second-hand smoke or
environmental tobacco smoke. This is
more dangerous than mainstream
smoke.
27. THIRD-HAND SMOKE
smoke left for a long time on sofa, beddings,
pillow and other objects. This is also called
residual tobacco smoke (RTS). It settles along
with dust and can last for months. This smoke
still contains harmful chemicals and
carcinogens.
28. Inhaling mainstream smoke increases the
risk of lung cancer and may increase the risk
of other types of cancers.
Second-hand and third-hand smoke are
also harmful and are inhaled by non-smokers
putting them at risk of acquiring cancer also.
These two types of cigarette smoke can also go
into the body through the skin.
33. BREATHING DIFFICULTY
A person who is having difficulty breathing feels short of breath,
has trouble inhaling and exhaling or feels as though he/she cannot
get enough oxygen
34. HALITOSIS OR BAD BREATH
An unpleasant smell coming from the
mouth
44. CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASES
Refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow
blockage and breathing-related problems
45. CANCER (OF THE MOUTH, THROAT, SKIN, LUNGS AND OTHER BODY PARTS)
Disease in which some of the body’s cells grow
uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body
48. HEART ATTACK
Also called myocardial infarction, happens when
a part of the muscle does not get enough blood
49. STROKE
If someone has a stroke, a blood vessel in their brain bursts or becomes
blocked, which may kill them or make them unable to move one side of
their body
50. 1.WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE SHORT-TERM
