The city of Granada has several beautiful historic places, most notably the Alhambra palace dating back to the 9th century. The Alhambra was originally a simple fortress called AlHamra for its red earth construction. Nearby is the Carmen of the Martyrs garden covering over seven hectares known formerly as the Captives Corral. The Gardens of the Triumph are also historic, surrounded by buildings and featuring colorful fountains at night. Mariana Pineda was executed in the gardens in 1831 after fighting for freedom.
