This document describes the process of gravimetric analysis, which involves quantitatively precipitating an ion from a solution and weighing the resulting pure precipitate to determine the percentage of that ion in the original sample. The key steps are: 1) precipitating the ion of interest using a reagent, 2) filtering and drying the pure precipitate, and 3) calculating the percentage based on the precipitate weight. An example is provided of using this method to determine the molar concentration of lead ions in a water sample by precipitating lead phosphate and weighing the solid product.
