Greenhouse Scholars Scholarship
After hearing the news about my selection as a semifinalist for the Greenhouse Scholars program, I began to ponder what the impact of being a
Scholar will have on my life. Being that I will be the first in my family to go to college, my current mentor will no longer be able to relate to any of
my upcoming problems. My older brother has been the person I have relied on for guidance. He has encouraged me to persevere and make smart
choices in order to work for my aspirations. My brother made a few mistakes and ended up being blessed with a beautiful daughter. Unfortunately, my
niece halted his advancement of a higher education. It has made me wonder, will I adventure through this college experience alone, or will I have
somebody to guide, encourage, and inspire me to achieve more? Everyone needs a leader to study and learn from. As I approach an unfamiliar scene
with college, I feel a mentorship provided by Greenhouse will be vital for my future endeavors. My research on the...show more content...
I want to build an enduring relationship with a mentor the way Lindsey Price talked about when she came to my high school. Similar to a curious
younger sibling, I plan to pick my mentor's brain for advice. Most importantly, I will be open to failure as a Greenhouse Scholar. My failure will
not come from choices, but from taking risks. A mentor can push me to join new clubs, participate in school activities, and validate my failures. I
will work hard until I reach failure so I can learn from my mistakes while knowing that my mentor will be there for instruction. By providing me a
role model who will aid me through my college life, I can become the accomplished student and caring person I strive to be. The mentorship given to

My Passion For Scholarship
My passion for intercultural study started when I was fifteen years old. I had just began to learn French for my high school language requirement,
and our teacher told us about an exchange trip we could apply to participate in, where we would be matched up with a student from France who
was roughly the same age as us and we would spend four weeks living together (two weeks in our home and two weeks in theirs). I chose to apply,
with no clue what a huge impression such an experience would have on my life. I was accepted into the program, and was matched with a girl
named Aline, who was exactly two days older than me and lived in Strasbourg, the largest city in Alsace. We exchanged emails for a few months, and
in February of 2012 she and her...show more content...
Just having Aline stay with my family for that short time taught me so much more about human nature and the importance and difficulties of
crosscultural communication than I had ever learned in school. In June, I flew with eleven other kids from my high school to Alsace, and got to live
with Aline's family in Strasbourg for two weeks. The impact that the trip had on me is indescribable. Through the immersion in both French and
Alsatian culture, I began to grasp for the first time both how small and how very large the world is. I had never spent so much time thinking about
the way life was for other people, and found that once I began thinking about it I couldn't stop; I learned so much about intercultural communication
and exchange over those couple weeks, and I developed a thirst for travel that I had never had before. I came back from the trip with a new
perspective on life, and began thinking a lot more often about the interplay between cultures, both in America and abroad. It was on the flight home that
I decided I wouldn't mind spending my entire life learning about the rest of the

What Are Summer Bridge Programs?
What are Summer Bridge Programs?
Summer bridge programs are a type of remediation and support program (Kezar, 2000). Like most of these programs, their creation resulted from the
need to help new populations make the transition to college (Kezar, 2000). The main goal is to increase the retention rates of the populations that they
serve and to ensure equal chances for success in their pursuit of quality education (Kezar, 2000). This is crucial because according to Gerdes and
Mallinckrodt (1994) forty percent of college entrants leave higher education without earning a degree, and it is reported that studies show anywhere
between twenty to forty percent of first time students require remedial coursework upon college entrance (National Conference of State Legislature,
2016).With that being said, Ohland and Crockett (2002) warn that programs should not identify themselves as being remedial as this may carry a
stigma to the students which will hurt their retention efforts and numbers of participation. Many programs are targeted to support members of
minority, low income, disabled, or first generation students (Kezar, 2000). The main focus of most programs is to give disadvantaged students the
same chance of graduating as nonminority students (Ohland & Crockett, 2002). Several common factors play a role in impeding minority acclimation
into the college environment, which include: a lack of academic preparation, a lack of peers with common characteristics, and financial need

The Benefits Of Athletic Scholarships
Imagine you are a high school AllState football player looking to earn a D1 scholarship for college. You know 12% of athletes get a chance to play
in college, so you are thrilled when a college coach calls you and offers you a scholarship at a top athletic program. Another thing: you cannot afford to
attend the college without the scholarship. Now imagine you play one year of college football, and you get a seasonending injury; your college
scholarship could now be in jeopardy. This scenario plays out every year over thousands of campuses. Most colleges grant oneyear guaranteed athletic
scholarships and few universities guarantee 4 years. Revoking scholarships takes away the socioeconomic diversity that college scholarships often
bring to the campus. Students who are on athletic scholarships should not be deprived of their funding due to injury because college costs are so
expensive, athletic scholarships increase socioeconomic diversity at colleges, and it is not right to take away something the students, in good faith,
worked for their whole lives. "An athletic scholarship is an amount of financial aid awarded to a studentathlete from the college athletic department"
(Lancaster). The average cost of a college education is approximate $21,565. In addition, the average household income is from $56,000 to $75,000.
Most families cannot afford the high costs of college. The NCAA, or National Collegiate Athletic Association, is an organization that regulates

Why I Chose Scholarship
I want to continue my education so I can get the best job I possibly can. I know the only way I can achieve that goal is to continue my education. I
also want to be financially stable so my kids and wife never has to worry about being able to go on vacation, or going shopping, or helping out friends
and family when they need me. I want to be able to help, and it all starts with getting a good job, which requires a higher level of education.
The reason I want to study exercise sciences is because I want to be an athletic trainer. I want a career where I can help people and be around sports
at the same time, and being an athletic trainer would allow me to accomplish that. Being around athletes that remind me of my past self would be so

It is a wonderful state with many dedicated communities. Indianapolis and Fort Wayne are a couple cities with an abundance of opportunities.
However, Adams County is a fantastic place to raise a family in my opinion. I'm definitely biased from growing up here and being a fifth generation
of the area, but I would recommend Adams County to anyone looking for with a value of community that embraces the idea of a city of safety. I also
believe that we are fortunate to be a community that has three school districts that received high ratings not only at the state level but in national
rankings, which would create a desire to return Adams County to raise a family.
I know for sure of one thing that keeps collegeeducated people from returning to Adams County after they have completed their education. First of
all, I believe it all goes back to their high school days. I know from experience, there is no significant activities for teenagers in Monroe, Berne, or
Decatur. Yes, in Decatur and Berne, we can bowl. But we can only bowl so much, and it can get costly. Since as teens many find the area boring, when
given the opportunity to move on from the Adams County area. Then when drawn to larger cities that have more activities, they choose not to

individuals. For myself wanting to major

Why I Want To Get A Scholarship
Like a lot of students applying for these scholarships, I do not come from the most fortunate family. I was raised by a single mother. My mother did
everything in her power to keep us afloat in this rough world, including attending a community college to become a licensed practical nurse while
having a child at home. All my mother ever asked of me was to stay out of trouble and keep my grades up so I can attend a good college. I knew that if I
did not gain a scholarship to a school, she would have to pay out of pocket for college. I could not put that burden on her shoulders because I knew
she could not afford it. With that motivation, I worked hard through all my years of school to make the best grades possible. I managed to make my
mother proud by being an honor graduate from a predominantly white high school, making 24 on the ACT, and earning a full scholarship to Alcorn State

felt Alcorn was the going to be a place where I could achieve my career goals, mature into a responsible young man, and have fun. However,
halfway through my first semester, I began to have too much fun and lose sight of why I was at Alcorn. My grades slipped because of this and I dug
myself into a hole I could not get out of. I tried my hardest to bring my grades up next the semester but it was not enough. I finished with a 2.86grade

Why I Deserve This Scholarship
I should be chosen for this scholarship because I am a positive, hard working student who is very involved in my school and my community, and has
future goals. I believe that I hold all those characteristics, plus many more.
School is very important to me. I show this by working hard in my classes and being involved in extracurricular activities. I have received all A's
throughout my high school years and my teachers can always depend on me. At school I am a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletics, Math Club,
Smith Cotton United Foreign Language Club, Key Club, Show Choir, National Honor Society, and the Tennis team. I enjoy activities where I can learn
and have fun at the same time.
School to me though is not just about getting the good grades, it is also about reaching out and helping other students. Through the activities that I
am involved in, I try to be a leader, but not in the normal ways that one might think of. I am a leader by being nice to others, praising them when
they are doing something well, and by showing the right example. People will respect and look up to you if you show them love and compassion. To
me that is what a leader is all about. Not only do I work hard at school to get good grades and to be a leader, but I also work hard out of school. For the
past three years I have been working for the Wheeler and Woolery families. During my time with these families, I have babysat Ms. Woolery's two
children, worked at the Pork Place

Essay Ap English Class
It has been an interesting semester of AP English. I wrote a total of four essays, each one seem to be better then the last. My best essay had to have
been my college scholarship essay. The prompt I used for my scholarship essay was "something I know now that I wish I knew when I was younger".
I talk about how failure is something everyone should experience, because it helps you learn from your mistakes and gain valuable experience. I truly
believe in this concept, which helped me, dive head first into this essay. Something else that made this essay standout, as my best work is that I was
able to get my point across and use some personally experiences that helped drive the point home. In summary, my college scholarship essay is
probably the best evidence of my hard work because I put a lot of thought and effort into writing it. Making this portfolio made me think about my
writing skills and what level of writing I am on. I think that I made some improvements to my writing, but I could have done better. Some
improvements I made during this semester would be better organization; I was able to produce my own outline that actually helped me while I was
writing my essay. Another improvement that I made would be the ability to find three main points that could be argued in a paper. Even though there
was improvement in some aspects of my writing there are some areas that could use a little work. I need to do a better job of supporting my main
points. I am able to find the main

Now imagine you play one year of college football, and you get a seasonending injury; your college scholarship could now be in jeopardy. This scenario plays out every year over thousands of campuses. Most colleges grant oneyear guaranteed athletic scholarships and few universities guarantee 4 years. Revoking scholarships takes away the socioeconomic diversity that college scholarships often bring to the campus. Students who are on athletic scholarships should not be deprived of their funding due to injury because college costs are so expensive, athletic scholarships increase socioeconomic diversity at colleges, and it is not right to take away something the students, in good faith, worked for their whole lives. "An athletic scholarship is an amount of financial aid awarded to a studentathlete from the college athletic department" (Lancaster). The average cost of a college education is approximate $21,565. In addition, the average household income is from $56,000 to $75,000. Most families cannot afford the high costs of college. • 8. Why I Chose Scholarship I want to continue my education so I can get the best job I possibly can. I know the only way I can achieve that goal is to continue my education. I also want to be financially stable so my kids and wife never has to worry about being able to go on vacation, or going shopping, or helping out friends and family when they need me. I want to be able to help, and it all starts with getting a good job, which requires a higher level of education. The reason I want to study exercise sciences is because I want to be an athletic trainer. I want a career where I can help people and be around sports at the same time, and being an athletic trainer would allow me to accomplish that. Indianapolis and Fort Wayne are a couple cities with an abundance of opportunities. However, Adams County is a fantastic place to raise a family in my opinion. I'm definitely biased from growing up here and being a fifth generation of the area, but I would recommend Adams County to anyone looking for with a value of community that embraces the idea of a city of safety. I also believe that we are fortunate to be a community that has three school districts that received high ratings not only at the state level but in national rankings, which would create a desire to return Adams County to raise a family. I know for sure of one thing that keeps collegeeducated people from returning to Adams County after they have completed their education. First of all, I believe it all goes back to their high school days. I know from experience, there is no significant activities for teenagers in Monroe, Berne, or Decatur. Yes, in Decatur and Berne, we can bowl. But we can only bowl so much, and it can get costly. Since as teens many find the area boring, when given the opportunity to move on from the Adams County area. Then when drawn to larger cities that have more activities, they choose not to returnwith the exception to visit family. Secondly, the lack of economic growth outside of manufacturing leaves little choices for collegeeducated individuals. For myself wanting to major Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Why I Want To Get A Scholarship Like a lot of students applying for these scholarships, I do not come from the most fortunate family. I was raised by a single mother. My mother did everything in her power to keep us afloat in this rough world, including attending a community college to become a licensed practical nurse while having a child at home. All my mother ever asked of me was to stay out of trouble and keep my grades up so I can attend a good college. I knew that if I did not gain a scholarship to a school, she would have to pay out of pocket for college. I could not put that burden on her shoulders because I knew she could not afford it. With that motivation, I worked hard through all my years of school to make the best grades possible. I managed to make my mother proud by being an honor graduate from a predominantly white high school, making 24 on the ACT, and earning a full scholarship to Alcorn State University to major in biology....show more content... It was a culture shock to me coming from a mostly white high school to a historically black college. It was also my first time away from home. I felt Alcorn was the going to be a place where I could achieve my career goals, mature into a responsible young man, and have fun. However, halfway through my first semester, I began to have too much fun and lose sight of why I was at Alcorn. My grades slipped because of this and I dug myself into a hole I could not get out of. I tried my hardest to bring my grades up next the semester but it was not enough. I finished with a 2.86grade point average instead of the 3.0grade point average I needed to keep my Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 14. Scholarship Boy or Not? Scholarship Boy or Not? In the essay "Achievement of Desire", Richard Rodriguez takes author Richard Hoggart's, "Scholarship Boy", and uses it as a reference point to capture his own life experiences as a scholarship boy. Growing up in a working class house hold, Richard was not the average product of his environment. Much like Hoggarts' scholarship boy, Rodriguez was a very dedicated student that excelled in most of his studies. • 16. Why I Deserve This Scholarship I should be chosen for this scholarship because I am a positive, hard working student who is very involved in my school and my community, and has future goals. I believe that I hold all those characteristics, plus many more. School is very important to me. I show this by working hard in my classes and being involved in extracurricular activities. I have received all A's throughout my high school years and my teachers can always depend on me. At school I am a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletics, Math Club, Smith Cotton United Foreign Language Club, Key Club, Show Choir, National Honor Society, and the Tennis team. I enjoy activities where I can learn and have fun at the same time. School to me though is not just about getting the good grades, it is also about reaching out and helping other students. Through the activities that I am involved in, I try to be a leader, but not in the normal ways that one might think of. I am a leader by being nice to others, praising them when they are doing something well, and by showing the right example. People will respect and look up to you if you show them love and compassion. To me that is what a leader is all about. Not only do I work hard at school to get good grades and to be a leader, but I also work hard out of school. For the past three years I have been working for the Wheeler and Woolery families. During my time with these families, I have babysat Ms. Woolery's two children, worked at the Pork Place Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Essay Ap English Class It has been an interesting semester of AP English. I wrote a total of four essays, each one seem to be better then the last. My best essay had to have been my college scholarship essay. The prompt I used for my scholarship essay was "something I know now that I wish I knew when I was younger". I talk about how failure is something everyone should experience, because it helps you learn from your mistakes and gain valuable experience. I truly believe in this concept, which helped me, dive head first into this essay. Something else that made this essay standout, as my best work is that I was able to get my point across and use some personally experiences that helped drive the point home. In summary, my college scholarship essay is probably the best evidence of my hard work because I put a lot of thought and effort into writing it. Making this portfolio made me think about my writing skills and what level of writing I am on. I think that I made some improvements to my writing, but I could have done better. Some improvements I made during this semester would be better organization; I was able to produce my own outline that actually helped me while I was writing my essay. Another improvement that I made would be the ability to find three main points that could be argued in a paper. Even though there was improvement in some aspects of my writing there are some areas that could use a little work. I need to do a better job of supporting my main points. I am able to find the main Get more content on HelpWriting.net
