The handicraft industry in Jammu and Kashmir has historical importance and potential for employment generation. It provides a competitive advantage through unique designs, quality, and cost. The state government prioritizes this sector due to its employment capacity and demand for wood carving, paper mach辿, carpets, shawls, and embroidery. While production and exports of handicrafts increased between 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, exports declined slightly in 2012-2013. The sector faces challenges like limited infrastructure, market access, and technology, but also opportunities in domestic and global demand if issues are addressed.
