2. WHAT IS HAZE?
ï‚„ Haze is traditionally an atmospheric phenomenon where dust,
smoke and other dry particles obscure the clarity of the sky.
ï‚„ It acts like a blanket over a big area and stops the sunlight from
penetrating the smoke.
ï‚„ It not only traps the heat , but it also reduce the supply of oxygen
within the area of the land.
3. WHAT CAUSED HAZE IN SINGAPORE?
ï‚„ Haze was actually carried to Singapore by wind from Indonesia.
ï‚„ People in Indonesia burns forest as a rudimentary agricultural
technique involves the felling of forest trees prior to a dry season
and subsequently, the burning of these trees in the following dry
season as a provision of fertilizers to support their crop activities.
ï‚„ This is often repeated on the same plot of land until it is denuded
of its nutrients and could no longer suffice to support agricultural
yields.
ï‚„ Then farmers would move on to another plot of land and practices
their slash and burn technique which causes the burning of
forests and haze.
4. HOW DOES IT AFFECT OUR
HEALTH?
ï‚„ Respiratory illness although it can affect the eyes and skin.
Asthmatics are definitely at a higher risk and the babies in the
pregnant women womb will have slightly decreased lower IQ , low
weight and the worst case scenario, they will die.
ï‚„ Many children and the elderlies may be down with breathing
problems such as asthma and sinus.
5. HOW DOES IT AFFECT
SINGAPORE?
ï‚„ Mild haze began to affect Singapore at 13 June 2013.
ï‚„ Singaporeans fall sick easily due to the dependency on medicines.
ï‚„ The particles in the haze(Smoke) is smaller than 2.5 microns.
Particles that is smaller than 2.5 microns would get into the
bloodstreams and would not get out therefore making it dangerous.
ï‚„ People working during the haze would be very dangerous especially
outdoors like the construction workers. The workers are sent home
and would not get income due to no work.
ï‚„ Activities in Singapore are canceled. For example, in the Boys
Brigade the Stage 3 Assessment.

amount was S$60 million in tourism receipts could be at stake.
6. SOLUTIONS TO HAZE
ï‚„ Singapore could help Indonesia by sending Aircrafts with water to
subside the fire from getting bigger.
ï‚„ People should stay indoors when there is haze. They should only
exit their homes if they have something to help their air circulation
through their bodies.
ï‚„ N95 masks were used by many to help better air circulations.
ï‚„ Cloud seeding. Its the process of spreading dry ice or silver
iodine, into the upper parts of the clouds to stimulate the
precipitation process and form rain.
