1 Main healthcare challenges Innovation is key to prevent rising cost of healthcare in the future Rising costs Ageing population Chronic diseases Healthcare costs are increasing and healthcare as it is today is unsustainable - health spending per capita is increasing by around 1.9% each year (compared to 0.6% annual growth rate).1 COVID-19 is increasing system cost even further. Life expectancy in the EU-27 between 2002-2018 increased by 3.3 years, from 77.7 to 81 years 2 driven by demography changes. Rising number of chronic diseases and comorbidities - 87% of all deaths in the EU.3 Many cases of chronic diseases are preventable and linked to four common risk factors — tobacco, harmful use of alcohol, nutrition and lack of physical activity.
