At least 50 of the channel's 200 employees also face job cuts. Sandhu blamed the channel's financial problems on it being blocked on cable networks in Punjab at the behest of a powerful political entity. The channel chairman said they are only undertaking downsizing and the channel will continue operating.

The resignation follows the decision of Kansan News Private Limited (KNPL) the company owning the channel to drastically scale down its operations. At least 50 of about 200 channel staffers also face an axe as the management has embarked on a major downsizing exercise to cut the mounting financial losses estimated to be about Rs 100 crore. Sandhu announced his decision at a specially convened meeting with the channel staff on Thursday evening. He turned emotional as he recounted the circumstances under which he had to opt out, while a couple of staffers broke down on hearing that a lot of the channel employees were being put on notice. In his message posted on YouTube on Friday, Sandhu blamed the channels financial woes on its continued blockage on the cable network in Punjab at the behest of a powerful political entity. Since the operations of the channel are being considerably scaled down, I wouldnt be part of the project, he said. When contacted, KNPL chairman Jaspal Singh Kandhari scotched rumours that the channel was being shut down. We have only undertaken an internal exercise for downsizing, but the channel operation will continue to run, he added.
