4. o 1849: Vicente de la Ossa
purchases a third of Rancho Los
Encinos
o 1850: de la Ossa begins
construction of his adobe
hacienda:
o 1857: Rancho El Encino is a
successful grazing area and rest
stop for travelers.

Garnier Brothers.
o Rancho El Encino becomes a
thriving sheep ranch, shipping
quality wool the world over.
o 1876: A drought in the area
sends the Garniers to France
o 1877: Overdue taxes cause the
rancho to be auctioned.
7. o 1887: Deed of the property is
transferred to Domingo Amestoy.
o 1910: His sons, Peter and John,
began subdividing the ranch.
o 1915: W.H. Hay buys the Rancho
for a price of over $1,000,000.
o 1920-1945: A population pressure
on the valley led to the
development of Encino.
