Home Backup Generators
A few years ago in the land before time
(pre-Internet), generators werent need
so much by the average homeowner.
Blackouts were as common as they were
today, but guess what? Internet was not.
When storms hit or Mother Nature
decides to vent her frustration on
people, blackouts happen.
 When blackouts happen, we need
online access to keep updated on the
weather and on our friends and family.
Also, twitters and facebooks need to be
updated!
Home generator types are like ying and
yang, or PCs and Macs. There are two
flavors: the portable and the standby.
Both of these are fueled by
 gasoline
 natural gas
 diesel
 liquefied petroleum gas
 Portable gas generators are cheaper.
They will not power your entire house.
Theyre tiny things with limited power
output.
Portables will power the essentials of your
home, which should include your
refrigerator and NOT your Wifi. You can
tweet after the crisis, not during.
 A portable generator with a 4000-5000W
electrical output can cost between
$350-$500.
 However, portables require extra-long
extension cords to power appliances.
This creates a maze you would have to
navigate in the dark. Be weary!
Connected directly to the home and
fuel source.
Can essentially run forever, as long as
fuel source exists.
 Designed to start automatically.
 Your generator should produce greater
wattage than the total amount needed
by your appliances.
Remember to account for the cushion,
which is the extra power used to deal
with power surges.
Power surges are also called startup
wattage and every appliance needs it.
