Honesty refers to integrity, truthfulness, and straightforwardness in one's conduct and interactions. It is valued across many cultures. Thomas Jefferson is attributed as saying "Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom." Stories are provided as examples of honesty being rewarded - such as a poor boy returning a lost money bag and receiving a good job as a result of his honesty. Reasons for lying include making oneself look better or avoiding embarrassment. To be honest, one should anticipate feelings of guilt, stop comparing oneself to others, accept consequences, do things that make one feel pride, and avoid situations where one might be compelled to lie for others.
