The story describes how the echidna got his spikes in Aboriginal Dreamtime mythology. Wanja the echidna was originally lazy and greedy, with beautiful black and white feathers. When the animals made medicine for sick emu, Wanja disobeyed warnings and greedily drank the leftover medicine, which burned off his feathers, leaving his spiky centers permanently exposed as punishment for his greed. The story teaches that greed is bad and medicine should only be taken when needed.
