Medical oxygen is an essential medicine in the treatment of COVID-19 and other diseases. Each Doctor, Nurse, Administrator needs to know how to calculate the need of oxygen for a patient in a covid center ward or an ICU. The oxygen requirement is different for Wards, Patients on Ventilator & Patients on BiPAP. Planning the Bed Capacity for Covid Center as per oxygen requirement is needed.

7. Patient on Oxygen Mask / Non Rebreathing Mask
(NRBM) / Venturi Mask.
Considering Maximum Oxygen Flow = 15 Litre/ min
For 1-bed
= 15(Lit) 60 (Min)
= 900 Litres / hour
= 900 24(hours)
= 21600 Litres / day / bed
= 21600 歎 7000 (1 jumbo)
= 3 Jumbo oxygen cylinder / day / bed.
8. Patient on Non Invasive Ventilator ( NIV)
Considering Maximum Oxygen Flow = 60
Litre/ min For 1-bed
= 60(Lit) 60 (Min)
= 3600 Litres / hour
= 3600 24(hours)
= 86400 Litres / day / bed
= 86400 歎 7000 (1 jumbo)
= 12 Jumbo oxygen cylinder / day / bed.
9. For Intubated Patient (Patient on invasive Ventilator)
Required oxygen flow considering = 12 Liters/
Min.
= 12(Lit) 60 (Min)
= 720 Liters / hour
= 720 24(hours)
= 17280 Liters / day / bed
= 17280 歎 7000 (1 jumbo)
= 2.5 to 3 Jumbo oxygen cylinder / day / bed.
10. EXAMPLE
For Covid ICU = 35 Beds.
Considering that all 35 ICU Beds running with Non Invasive
Ventilators.
Oxygen Req. of Covid ICU= Oxygen Requirement for 1bed
No of beds
= 86400 (lit of O2) 35 beds
= 3024000 Litres of gaseous O2
= 3024000 歎7000
= 432 Jumbo oxygen cylinder required / day
