HOW TO WASH YOUR
MARTIAL ARTS UNIFORM
CLEMENT NIKACHI
PROPER REPRESENTATION OF ONE'S
SELF IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF
YOUR MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING.
IT MAY BE HARD TO KEEP YOUR
KARATE CLOTHES CLEAN, BUT HERE
ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP CLEANING
YOUR UNIFORMS A LITTLE BIT
EASIER:
WHAT KIND OF
MATERIAL IS YOUR
UNIFORM?
MOST UNIFORMS ARE EITHER 100%
PERCENT COTTON OR A MIXTURE OF
A COTTON/POLYESTER BLEND.
UNIFORMS COME IN THREE WEIGHTS:
LIGHTWEIGHT
MIDDLEWEIGHT
HEAVYWEIGHT
LIGHTWEIGHT UNIFORMS ARE
CONSIDERED "STUDENT WEIGHT"
MIDDLEWEIGHT UNIFORMS ARE
CONSIDERED "ADVANCED STUDENT
WEIGHT"
HEAVYWEIGHT UNIFORMS ARE
CONSIDERED "INSTRUCTOR WEIGHT"
AND ARE MORE OFTEN THAN NOT
MADE OF 100% COTTON.
PRESOAK
PRESOAKING YOUR UNIFORM WILL
HELP TO ENSURE YOU GET ALL OF
DIRT OUT AND BE AS CLEAN AS
POSSIBLE.
PRESOAKING STEPS:
STEP 1: FILL A LARGE BUCKET OR
SINK WITH WARM WATER (MAKE
SURE THE WATER IS WARM NOT HOT).
STEP 2: ADD ONE CUP OF LAUNDRY
DETERGENT AND ONE CUP OF BAKING
SODA.
ADDING THE BAKING SODA WILL
HELP TO COUNTERACT ANY ODOR.
STEP 3: SOAK THE UNIFORM
OVERNIGHT.
STEP 4: HANG UNIFORM TO AIR DRY.
DO NOT PUT UNIFORMS IN THE
DRYER!
THE HEAT FROM THE DRYER CAN
CAUSE SHRINKAGE AND ALLOW
STAINS TO SET IN .
STEP 5: IRON YOUR UNIFORM.
MAKE SURE TO USE THE PROPER
SETTING (COTTON). BE SURE TO IRON
THE LEGS FLAT AND THE TOP IN THE
SHAPE OF A "T"
