The document provides guidance on writing an effective introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion for an essay analyzing two literary works. It emphasizes including a hook, tag, thesis statement, and background in the introductory paragraph. The body paragraphs should each have a topic sentence, concrete details from the works, commentary analyzing the details, and a concluding sentence. The conclusion restates the main points of analysis.
This document summarizes several social and economic problems facing Pakistan, their causes, and why they persist. The key problems discussed are: unimpressive growth rate due to lack of vision and reliable data; non-productive expenses like large bureaucracies and military spending; trade and budget deficits due to unchecked imports and luxurious government spending; inflation fueled by loan defaults and black market money; power shortages partially due to organized corruption; depleting gas reserves and increasing oil costs despite potential reserves; underinvestment due to issues like corruption and security concerns; and widespread tax evasion. The overarching point made is that the groups responsible for creating these problems through corruption and mismanagement are also the ones with the power to solve
The document provides guidance on writing an effective introductory paragraph. It should include a hook to interest the reader, an introduction to the subject being discussed, a bridge sentence connecting the subject to the topic, and a clear thesis statement. For example, one introductory paragraph discusses how writer Amy Tan draws from her familial relationships, language skills, and cultural background in her novel The Valley of Amazement, as evidenced through her work celebrating Chinese history and culture.

This document discusses the symposium technique used in nursing education. It defines a symposium as consisting of prepared speeches on different aspects of a topic, followed by audience discussion under a chairperson. The objectives of a symposium are to understand various perspectives and develop the ability to make judgments or form policies on an issue. A symposium provides broad understanding of a topic while allowing listeners to discuss it and make decisions. Though it engages participants cognitively, it may not emphasize affecting domains as well. The document also notes advantages like organization, insights gained, and uses of the technique, as well as limitations such as limited participation.
This document discusses inductive and deductive reasoning. It provides examples of using each type of reasoning to make conjectures based on patterns in examples, test conjectures, and draw logical conclusions. Examples include describing visual and number patterns, making conjectures about sums of odd integers and Goldbach's conjecture, and using inductive reasoning about moon cycles. The document contrasts inductive reasoning, which generalizes from specific examples, with deductive reasoning, which proves conclusions from general statements through logical arguments. It also discusses using Venn diagrams to determine whether conclusions can be logically deduced.
The document is a poem that uses Dr. Seuss style rhyming to explain the basic concepts of RDF (Resource Description Framework). It introduces two things, Thing One and Thing Two, which can be identified on the web using URLs or unique text identifiers. The poem explains that relationships between these things, like "plays with" can be represented by arrows or predicates with their own URLs. Finally, it describes how combining things and their relationships can create a graph-based description of resources on the web.
This document discusses phrases and sentences. It provides examples of phrases and sentences to illustrate the difference. Phrases are groups of words that lack a subject or verb or both, while sentences express a complete thought with a subject and verb. The document also discusses peer reviewing, which involves objectively reviewing and providing feedback on another student's writing to help them improve. It outlines how to conduct peer reviews, including asking questions if confused and offering examples or details. Students are instructed to read their paragraphs aloud and peer review each other's writing based on content.
This document provides an analysis and summary of the design elements of a magazine cover and contents page. It identifies key elements such as the masthead, cover lines, images, use of font sizes and colors. Specific techniques are examined like the placement of images and text to create balance and guide the reader through the materials in an organized manner. Design choices are assessed for how they would attract readers and highlight important information.
This document contains a weekly homework summary and schedule for a classroom. It lists homework assignments in reading, math, spelling, and religion for Thursday, December 15, 2011. It also provides notes on upcoming exams and quizzes, information on classroom jobs and their pay, and attachments.
\n\nThe document provides instruction on proper comma and semicolon usage. It discusses four main uses of commas: in lists, with unnecessary phrases, combining sentences, and after introductory elements. It also explains that semicolons can connect two independent clauses or be used with conjunctive adverbs. Examples are given for each rule to illustrate proper punctuation. The document aims to help readers master comma and semicolon usage.
The document discusses the language and style that will be used in articles for a youth music magazine. It will use slang words and abbreviations that are common among youth audiences. Sentence and paragraph length will vary depending on the section, with shorter sentences and paragraphs on the front cover and longer ones in the double page spread interview. The tone will be informal and upbeat to create a casual bond with readers. The subject matter of the double page spread interview and contents page are also outlined.

This document discusses the rise of cell phone novels and Twitter novels. It began in Japan in 2000 with short, simple stories published in installments on mobile websites or apps. These "keitai shosetsu" became popular among young female writers and readers. The format spread to other countries and publishing platforms like Twitter. While criticized for literary quality, cell phone novels demonstrate how new technologies can lower barriers to publishing and expand access to different forms of literature.
This document provides an outline for writing a play review in 4 paragraphs. The first paragraph introduces the theme, atmosphere, and plot. The second paragraph evaluates the technical aspects like setting, lighting, costumes, and sound design. The third paragraph assesses the acting in terms of believability, voice, movement, and outstanding performances. The final paragraph gives an overall evaluation of whether the performance was pleasing and discusses any confusing aspects along with a justified personal opinion.

24. Paraphrasing! Another form of TLC!!!!
As part of your body paragraph, you will not only use a
quotes, but you will also paraphrase.
Paraphrasing = putting information into your own words.
For example:
In similar fashion, the narrator in Stolen Day convinces
himself that he has a debilitating disease; inflammatory
rheumatism. As you can see, both boys demonstrate
that they are gullible in making such juvenile
assumptions.
I paraphrased how the narrator was gullible in my own
words and did NOT use any EXACT sentences from the
story.
25. Here is our paragraph so far:
To begin, the boys from A Days Wait and Stolen Day share several
similarities. Schatz and the narrator both prove that they are very na誰ve.
For example, in A Days Wait, Schatz displays a na誰ve disposition when
it is discovered he confused the thermometer scales, Poor old Schatz.
Its like miles and kilometers. You arent going to die (302). This
demonstrates how Schatz confused Celsius and Fahrenheit, and,
therefore, believed he was going to die as a result of this
misunderstanding. In similar fashion, the narrator in Stolen Day
convinces himself that he has a debilitating disease; inflammatory
rheumatism. Due to overhearing the symptoms, such as an enlarged
heart, the narrators racing heart after a race leads him to believe that
he may have the disease. Of course, this is not the case because
everyones heart races after running. As you can see, both boys
demonstrate that they are gullible in making such juvenile assumptions.

27. CONCLUDING SENTENCE:
last sentence of the body
paragraph. It concludes the
paragraph by tying the
concrete details and
commentary back to the
topic sentence and/or thesis
statement.

LATER in your writing career, you will be creating more lengthy paragraphs
that contain more than ONE example!!!! Look at next slide
29. To begin, the boys from A Days Wait and Stolen Day share several
similarities. Schatz and the narrator both prove that they are very na誰ve.
For example, in A Days Wait, Schatz displays a na誰ve disposition when it is

Indeed, the similarities between Schatz and the narrator go beyond their
naivety, they also believe that they are going to die. As a result of
confusing the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales, Schatz spends the entire time
believing his 102 degree fever will cause him to die. He heard that
someone could not live with a temperature of 44 degrees, but he did not
realize that this was in Celsius. In comparison, the narrator believes that he
will die of inflammatory rheumatism, Its a wonder, with my inflammatory
rheumatism and all, I didnt just drop down dead (306). This illustrates how
the narrator believed he was going to die because he ran a race with his
brother and his heart beat rapidly afterwards. He clearly does not have
inflammatory rheumatism, but he is making himself believe that he does.
Therefore, it is evident that both Schatz and the narrator share several
similarities. THIS IS AN ADVANCED/ADVANCED VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
30. LINK TRANSITION SENTENCE:
the first sentence of a body
paragraph. It identifies one
aspect of the major thesis
and states a primary reason
why the major thesis is true.
31. Link transition sentence formula:
Transitional phrase + main idea of body #1 + main idea of body #2
Although Schatz and the narrator share similarities, they also
have many differences.
Transitional phrase + main idea of body #2 + main idea of body #3
You will always have TWO link transition sentences in a five-
paragraph essay.
32. Concluding Paragraph
Concluding transition,
Echo your major thesis without
repeating words verbatim.
Answer the so what? question for your reader.
What was he/she supposed to learn?
What were the main ideas of your essay?
Connect back to your HOOK!!!!!
33. In summation, Schatz and the narrators actions
and reactions both caused them to learn very
valuable lessons. Furthermore, the two boys in A
Days Wait and Stolen Day demonstrate that
there can be similarities and differences in
seemingly incomparable characters in two pieces
of writing. Schatz and the narrator showed how
being na誰ve can be both serious and comical.
Despite their naivety, Schatz is a much more
courageous boy than the narrator. Overall, each
boy learned a very valuable lesson about jumping
to conclusions. Courage is the discovery that you
may not win, and trying when you know you can
lose. It is evident that courage, or lack thereof,
plays a significant role in both stories. One must
understand that trying is half the battle and
courage comes in all shapes and ages!
