Martin Strain wrote the poem "Humanity" to illustrate humanity's struggles from single-celled organisms to multicellular life and our loss of focus on what is important. The poem depicts how life was lost after a catastrophe made the earth dark, but that humanity rose from the ashes like a phoenix. It represents our struggles with continental drift and changing conditions, as well as our flaws and journey that is not yet complete. However, the poem maintains hope for the future if we continue our progress.

4. I chose my poem Humanity because its one of my favorites. When I wrote this
piece, I thought of humanities struggles from a single celled organism to a
multicellular organism. I wanted to illustrate how we have come so far, but we
have stumbled along the way. We lost track of what is important. We still have a
long ways to go, however, we should not lose hope for the future.
The future can be as bright as we wish it to be.
5. A light in the sky, all became dark
Life was lost.
Here, I wanted to illustrate how the earth
became dark and how 90% of existing life became extinct.
6. I wanted to illustrate how, like the phoenix,
humanity rose from the ashes of a devastated planet.
7. In this stanza, I wanted to depict continental
drift and the lives lost because of it, as well as
how humanity struggled with the changing world.
8. I wanted to emphasize on the world continuing to change
around us, and our struggle for survival in unlivable conditions.
9. I wanted to represent Humanities flaws to better
Illustrate how, as a species, our journey is not yet complete.
We are essentially lost within ourselves, struggling to find away out.
10. For the last stanza in Humanity, I wanted to
illustrate all the positives. I wanted to reaffirm that we
should keep hope in our hearts when we look to the future.
11. Humanity has come a long way. The extinction of the dinosaurs gave
mammals a chance to conquer planet earth. A chance we took and are still
working on. As far as we have come, we are not done yet. There is still hate,
greed, violence, and war in this world. The earth and her various eco-systems
are diminishing, entire populations of different animals species
have been lost, disease and famine run rampant. Until humanity as a whole
stops inflicting such travesties on this planet and its other inhabitants, we
will not succeeded, until then our journey must continue.
