Food poverty in NYC affects many groups, including women, children, the elderly, the working class, and people with disabilities. Women make up a large portion of those relying on food assistance, with 20% living below the poverty level compared to 15% nationwide. Nearly half of households with children struggled to afford food, and over a quarter of children lived in poverty. Approximately one in six elderly residents receives food from aid programs, and 19% live in poverty. Over 20% of those accessing emergency food programs are employed, showing that the working class is also impacted. Around 30% of disabled adults live in poverty and rely on assistance programs.
