This document contains instructions for homework 2 in the CE201 Fall 2014 class. It includes 4 problems: 1) determining the maximum mass of a plate attached to 3 cables, each with a maximum tension of 8 kN; 2) finding the tensions in cables required to balance a 25-lb cylinder; 3) calculating the angle that produces maximum and minimum moments from a 200-lb force about a point; and 4) finding the resultant moment about a point from two applied forces of 150 N and 175 N. Students are to show all work and free body diagrams for full credit.

1. CE201-Fall 2014 Due 10/06/2014 Homework 2
1. The ends of the three cables are attached to a ring at A and to the edge of the uniform plate.
Determine the largest mass the plate can have if each cable can support a maximum tension of
8 kN
2. Determine the tension developed in cables AB, AC and AD required for equilibrium of the 25-lb
cylinder
Show all work and all necessary free body diagrams to receive full credit
2. 3. Determine the angle θ (0° ≤ θ ≤ 180°) of the force F = 200-lb so that it produces a maximum
moment and a minimum moment about point A. Also, what are the magnitudes of these
maximum and minimum moments?
4. Determine the resultant moment of the two applied forces about point A.
Take FB = 150 N, FC = 175 N.
