The author asks God a series of "why" questions about not being rich, beautiful, young, having a bigger house, or being popular. In response, God shows the author examples of people who have those things but are lonely, vain, dead, homeless, unable to find work, or have lost friends. God then shows the author a genius in prison, reminding that intelligence must be used wisely. God finally shows the author the Bible and His Son to demonstrate His great love for even a "thankless sinner."
