Natalie Dando and Hollie Cooper want to create an emotionally impactful music video that leaves a lasting impression on the audience. Their research found that performance-based music videos are most effective at eliciting emotion from viewers. They decided to focus on facial expressions to convey emotion, as the eyes and mouth are the main areas where feelings are expressed. Their concept splits the screen, with one person's eyes on top and the other's mouth on bottom, and uses props and makeup to portray the emotions in songs like "Candyman" by Christina Aguilera and "Love Is A Losing Game" by Amy Winehouse through the facial features.

So, this lead to our main aim of our
research to find out how top selling artists get this
emotion across to an audience through their We then decided that the two main places where
behaviour in the music videos and whether a emotions are expressed are through the eyes and
performance, narrative or conceptual form of video mouth. As shown here:
would do this. Our research then lead us to find out
that conceptual videos leave a lasting impression
however, it is performance music videos that touch
the consumer most emotionally. An Example of this
is Adele- Someone Like You.

This then lead us to decide how and why it catches
the audience emotionally, and we discovered it’s all
through facial expressions of that performer. For You can connotate these however way you
example, if you watch Sinead O’Connor- Nothing wish and you will get an emotion from it.

emotion trying to be portrayed through the music via
her emotional facial expressions.

3. This then got us to decide our concept of our music video, we’re going to have a screen split into
two, either pair of our eyes is going to the on the top half and one of our mouths is going to be on
the bottom half of the screen.
We are going to have different things changing throughout the song so this does not become
boring. For example one of our song choices we have thought of is “Candyman- Christina
Aguilera”. One of us would have red lips to adhere to the 50’s jazz style of music and we would
make sure our lips and eyes constantly remained happy, cheeky and portraying we are having fun.
E.g winking and overly happy smiles. We would also bring in props which tie in with the lyrics to
ensure the music is the key being advertised in this video, for example candy canes, sugar on the
lips and possibly lyrics written on our eye lids and extravagant eye make up, this will create mise-
en-scene and link in with the semiotics theory.

This would also work as our idea is nothing like the real music video.

Another choice is Amy Winehouse- Love Is A Losing Game. This has strong lyrics which can be
portrayed through props and because it is a bit more of a sad song we will ensure our eyes and mouths
show this. We can also do our make up run down our face to show upset, and maybe bring a hand in to
wipe the tears away with a heart, diamond, club and spade, painted on our nails to connotate the ‘game’ in
the song. This is also a less mainstream song so it will mean we will have less chance of being too overly
influenced by the original music video.
These are just some of our main ideas, but we also have plenty of others and many more props and
connotations in mind.
