This document outlines Chlo辿 Fong's research and design process for developing a product to raise awareness of winter mortality causes among older and younger people. It describes research showing many older adults are unaware of how their diminished sense of cold can lead to death in winter. Various idea generation techniques were used, including mind maps and decision matrices, to design thermochromic plant pots that change color with temperature. Expert consultation confirmed the concept was feasible, with the moving plant Mimosa pudica being more difficult to realize than stationary ferns. The conclusion outlines next steps to calculate needed thermal expansion, refine packaging design, and finalize product details before implementation.
2. RESEARCH
SUMMARY
Tens of thousands of older
people die each winter
But many are NOT AWARE of
the causes
Older people have a
diminished sense of when their
bodies are cold
9. The innate emotional affiliation of
human beings with other living
organisms (Wilson, 1986)
Interior plants improves productivity,
and can also provide psychological
benefits such as stress reduction (Lohr et al,
1996, Bringslimark et al, 2009)
THE BIOPHILIA EFFECT
10. NEED TO NURTURE
Care giving increases feelings of
happiness, security, and self-worth and
reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation
(Sable et al, 1993)
20. EXPERT CONSULATION- DR SHAUN LEE
Material Science lecturer at Brighton University
Looked at the models and sketches and said it was Do-able
However the Mimosa will be harder to make
Yay!
25. ACCORDING TO THE URS
A1.
Product must raise awareness in the public eye of the causes
of winter mortality in both younger and older generations
39. CONCLUSION AND STEPS
FORWARD
Materials: Calculate the thermal
expansion needed in the given
temperature range
Packaging: Find out materials, refine
design
Graphics: Packaging layout, wording,
colour scheme
Final touches: Engraving on pots, size
of plant, curvature.
