In what ways does your Music
video use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of a real
music video?

…Represents the artist positively and
sets clear her genre and style of Pop
which equals Love, Dancing, a couple
story and a mixture of pace.

GENRE
In terms of genre POP is portrayed through the story of a couple. It is questionable whether or not
her boyfriend is a memory or just a character in her head as she walks into scenes alone that cut to
her walking in with her ‘boyfriend’. The use of lighting, which also represents POP as bright colours
are often used, shows the difference between cuts allowing the audience open interpretation.

We stuck to the POP genre
through props and effects.
As it was a cold day our
actors couldn’t wear the
costumes we’d
intended, working around
this we used bright
pillows, flowers and warm
effects to bring across the
POP genre.
We also brightened up shots by increasing the brightness and contrast. Due to weather our
mise en scene had to be more implicit. For example we changed our actresses scarf to a
colourful one in happier scenes, make-up was very natural but attractive and hair was down
portraying her careless nature, which would attract our target audience 12 years and older.

Does My Music video challenge the forms
and conventions of a Music Video?

Similar to Lilly Allen's ’Smile’ music video there is no dancing, no extravagant things happening or any
obvious signs of a pop genre. Lilly Allen’s genre is well known which is why she is able to do this. Our
Music video challenges the perception of a pop music video similar to how Lilly Allen does.

The name ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ led to the idea of showing the artists life with and
without her boyfriend. We flit from memory and reality like Lilly Allen’s Music video pictured above.
Due to the fact the music video is narrative based we don’t have dancing, flashing lights, a mixture
of bright costumes and so ours challenges the expectancies of a POP genre.

Does My Music video challenge the forms
and conventions of a Music Video?

My music video’s pace and story is explicitly POP because the story is based on love. The pace speeds up during
each chorus and the artists image is entirely focused on in this narrative based video.

Overall the music video follows the forms and
conventions of a music video and Goodwin's Theory.

Voyeurism- The artist is
shown in ‘her room’ and
in a vest showing flesh.

There are Close-ups

Lyrics to Visuals- ‘I cant let
you go’ Pictures are overlapped
to show her memory of them
(she’s not letting go)
Music to Visuals- Cuts are
made appropriate to pace. Intertextuality- Not appropriate or needed in our Music Video.

Many artists take on a style which is portrayed through their
music video and CD covers. This music video uses and
partially challenges the perception of music videos by being
entirely narrative based whilst still fulfilling Goodwin's
theory of what should be in a music video. Therefore
developing the idea of what should be in a music video and
where the line is drawn
