Railway engineers extending the Dibrugarh-Sadiya railway line to Ledo for the Assam Railways and
Trading Company (AR&TC) in 1882 were using elephants for haulage and noticed that the mud on
one pachyderms feet smelled of oil.
Retracing the trail of footprints, they found oil seeping to the surface.
One of the engineers, an Englishman William Lake was an oil enthusiast and persuaded the company
to drill a well.
And thus this place gets its name from the relentless persuasion by him on the workers to do
some physical activity at that place.

Why was Yanam known as Kalyanapuram?
City of Weddings/Marriages
The Venkanna Babu Temple had been very famous for
performing Child Marriages during the pre-independence days.
Due to the dedicated efforts of the Social Reformer, Shri Raja
Ram Mohun Roy, the Sarada Act (prevention of Child
Marriages) was implemented by the then British Government in
India.
As the Yanam Region was under French rule, the people from the
nearby State, used to come to this Temple for performing child
marriages. Even people from Madras, Hyderabad and other
distant places used to come to Yanam for conducting child
marriages. In the past, some hundreds of marriages were
performed daily in this temple.
Hence, Yanam was also called "KALYANA PURAM".
