Indirect Questions

 When/Why/How?
When?

       For formal occasions
To talk to strangers/teachers………
Why?
To be polite!
How?

. . . a sentence with 2 clauses;
the second clause contains a
question.

*BUT, the structure of the
question is in sentence form.
Examples . . .
Regular Question: Indirect Question:

Where is your Would you mind
college? telling me where
                        your college is
                        please?.
What qualifications Do you know what
do you need to apply? qualifications you
                        need to apply?.

How much does a I was wondering how
course cost? much a course costs.
How?
For indirect questions, we start with an
introductory clause. This is a main
clause. It can be a sentence or a
question.
Main clause: Dependent clause:
                    Wh- questions:
I’d like to know…
                    …WHEN the course starts.
Tell me…
                    …WHERE your college is.
I don’t know…
                    …HOW much the course costs.
I wonder…

                    Yes/No questions:
Do you know…?
…IF there is financial help for
Can you tell me…? overseas students?

Do you have any …WHETHER we can visit
idea…? Cambridge before we start?
Grammar Tips:
Remember: When you are writing the dependent clause in an
Indirect Question, do NOT use Do, Does, or Did.

Examples:

regular question: Where did the teacher go?
indirect question: Do you know WHERE did the teacher go?

Do you know WHERE the teacher went?

Note: After the WH- word, IF, or WHETHER . . .
Use a sentence, NOT a question.
Quiz Time!
     Your favourite type of exercise!
Complete each sentence so that it means the same as
   the sentence before it.
• What’s your name?
Can I ask you ………………………………………………………………………….
• Where are you from?
I was wondering ……………………………………………………………………..
• What kind of room would you like?
Can you tell me ………………………………………………………………………..
• Do you have any hobbies?
I would like to know…………………………………………………………………
• What do you want to study?
I need to know…………………………………………………………………………..
Now, let’s check…
•What’s your name?

•What kind of room would you like?
Can you tell me what kind of room you would like?
