There are three main types of attachment identified by Ainsworth: secure attachment, insecure-avoidant attachment, and insecure-resistant attachment. Each attachment type has different characteristics such as levels of separation anxiety, stranger anxiety, reunion behavior, and willingness to explore. Ainsworth's research into individual differences in attachment identified these three main categories and their defining features.
