Induction Standards For Those Working With Children, Young People And Families. A USER FRIENDLY SUMMARY OF THE REQUIREMENTS Part Six Of Our Seven Part Guide
Standard 6 – Safeguard children (keep them safe from harm) WHAT YOU ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW OR UNDERSTAND =============================================================== You need to know what to do if you find yourself working with a child or young person in danger of harm or neglect. You will need to show that you understand the laws, policies and procedures there are to protect a child or young person from harm You will be expected to show that you understand what harm and neglect and how to recognise they may be happening to a child or young person you work with.
Standard 6 – Safeguard children (keep them safe from harm) MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES LAWS, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES =============================================================== Understand what children and young people want and need to feel safe Be able to describe your workplace’s policies and procedures on helping children and young people who have been abused
Standard 6 – Safeguard children (keep them safe from harm) MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES PROVIDING SAFE ENVIRONMENTS =============================================================== Understand what children and young people want and need to feel safe Have an awareness of what contributes towards a safe environment for the children and young people you work with.
Standard 6 – Safeguard children (keep them safe from harm) MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES RECOGNISING AND RESPONDING TO ABUSE =============================================================== Understand the different ways in which children and young people can be harmed by adults, other children and young people, or through the internet Understanding what is meant by the following: Physical Abuse Sexual Abuse Emotional Abuse Domestic Abuse Faltering growth
Standard 6 – Safeguard children (keep them safe from harm) MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES RECOGNISING AND RESPONDING TO ABUSE =============================================================== Understand what is meant by the following Institutional Abuse Bullying Self- harm Describe signs or possible indicators of abuse or neglect Describe the procedure you need to follow if you suspect any child is being abused, neglected or bullied. Understand the parental problems can increase the risk of harm to a child Describe what emergency action needs to be taken to protect a child, including outside normal office hours.
Standard 6 – Safeguard children (keep them safe from harm) MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES WORKING WITH OTHER AGENCIES =============================================================== Understanding what ‘multi-agency working’ means for you and your work environment Understand other agencies roles and responsibilities in keeping children safe from harm Know your local Safeguarding Board and role your agency, organisation or employer has on it.
Standard 6 – Safeguard children (keep them safe from harm) MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES WHISTLE-BLOWING (REPORTING FAILURES IN DUTY) =============================================================== Know when and how to refer a concern you have about a child protection Explain who to consult in relation a child-protection or child welfare concern. Understand your duty to report the unsafe practices of others Know what to do if you have followed your own workplace’s policies and procedures on reporting concerns, and you are not satisfied with the response Identify what to do when you do not get a satisfactory response form other organisations or agencies
