Standard 3 requires workers to understand health and safety requirements in their role. This includes understanding laws, policies, and procedures regarding health and safety as they apply to moving and handling people and objects, premises security, medication administration, personal safety, and risk assessment. Workers must know their responsibilities for maintaining safety, be trained in safe techniques and first aid, and understand risks and how to manage behaviors. Training is required to understand requirements in these key areas.

Standard 3 – Understand health and safety requirements WHAT YOU ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW OR UNDERSTAND =============================================================== What you need to know to do your job safely and not put yourself, your colleagues or the children and young people you work in danger. This is not only dictated by your organisations policies and procedures but also laws and regulations. You will be expected to understand the laws as they apply to your role. You will be required to undertake specialist learning or training or all of these areas.
Standard 3 – Understand health and safety requirements MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES LAWS, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES =============================================================== You must know about health and safety laws which apply to your working environment. You must know and understand your personal responsibility for the health and safety of the children, young people and families you work with.
Standard 3 – Understand health and safety requirements MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES MOVING, LIFTING AND HANDLING PEOPLE AND OBJECTS =============================================================== It is important that you know about the laws that govern moving, lifting and handling people and objects. You should have knowledge of how to assess risks relating to moving and handling people or objects. You should know about the safe moving and handling techniques relating to people and objects.
Standard 3 – Understand health and safety requirements MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES PREMISES =============================================================== Know and be aware of the security measures in place in your work environment. You need to understand how to promote fire safety in your work environment. You need to understand and apply the safe-working practices of your workplace when visiting other places.
Standard 3 – Understand health and safety requirements MAIN AREAS AND OUTCOMES MEDICATION AND HEALTH CARE PROCEDURES =============================================================== You must understand and know what healthy care means for your work with children and young people. You should know about any work infection-control needs and allergies of the children and young people you work with and any medication they are on. You should know how to get or arrange first aid or medical treatment in an emergency. You know and understand what you are not allowed to do, in relation to medication and health care procedures, at this stage of your learning.

You must understand how you manage challenging behaviour You should understand how you encourage positive behaviour
