I N T R O D U C T I O N
Hi, I am Tanvi Olivia Singh, an inquisitive science girl with an ingenious
imagination. I have always been fascinated by the world around me, nature,
machines- everything. How? why? when? are questions I have asked repeatedly
since I was a child. This curiosity and captivation for the way things worked,
made me get a Bachelors of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Following which I got placed on campus at one of biggest automobile
manufacturing companies in India, Maruti Suzuki India ltd. I have been working
here as a designer for in-house automations for almost 2 years now. My job is
challenging, fascinating and I love it. I have always had my own take on the
things around me and I believe there is always room for improvement.
Owing to these imperative characteristic of mine and my succinct experience in
mechanical designing I am inspired to take up design as a serious profession. I
wish to learn about design as a discipline and learn the right ethics and
sensibility to being a proficient designer. My aim is to be able to design
products that make life easier for the human race.
And so, I ask you for an opportunity to learn, grow and deliver.

PHOTOLUMINE SCE NT E XPLOSIVE D E TE CTION BUG
India is a densely populated country and our streets and markets are busy and
bustling with people. This makes it difficult to search such areas in the scenario of a
bomb threat. A small, portable, camouflaged, robotic device that could detect
explosives would be an apt solution.
So , I propose the Photo-luminescent Explosive Detection Bug.
It works on the technology developed by the University of Florida. *
It can manure above crowded areas.
It is remote controlled.
Sends back data to the host receiver.
Has a GPS tracker to give a location feedback.
*The University of Florida has invented a way to instantly, reliably, and inexpensively detect
the presence of TNT and other explosives simply by shining green or blue laser light on an
object that may potentially have traces of explosives. Once the laser is shined at a
material, the material re-emits it at specific wavelengths that are different for each material
- just like a fingerprint.

ME CHANICAL AR M CAN CR USHE R
I designed and fabricating a mechanical arm can crusher using simple
pneumatics and hydraulics. This is an application of the force and torque that
can be applied by water pressure. Big syringes are utilized to accelerate the
water and the force.
It is made of a simple arm with a clamp using household wire casing for the
structure and nuts and bolts, electrical tape and m-seal to secure the joints.
Large syringes and transparent plastic pipe are used to flow the water. The
whole structure is mounted on a wooden frame.
The arm has three actuated motions; up and down, right and left and the
opening and closing of the clamp. The arm can clamp onto a can, raise it up
and crush it. All the actuations are controlled by pulling and pressing the pistol
of the three syringes.

The standard modern day refrigerator
isn’t made for the typical Indian
household.
The Indian household needs to
store big vessels. We don’t have a
habit of symmetrical cuboidal
storage dishes. Our dishes are
irregular in shape; circles, ovals
and rectangles of all sizes.
The average Indian kitchen
doesn’t have the space to keep
huge double door fridges even if
they can afford it.
The Indian household stores many
bottles of all shapes and sizes.

Addressing all these issues and few
added features the DIY Refrigerator
was designed.
The DIY refrigerator is made
up of different parts that can
be assembled vertically or
horizontally so that it can be
assembled according to
available space.
Each unit can be detached
from the cooling unit and
transported. It will keep cool
for a few hours and behave
like a cooling box thanks to
the insulation.
There is more storage space
available for big irregular containers
and a separate part for only bottles
of shapes and sizes that could be
detached and carried to the dinner
table or in a car for picnic.
Each part has power and
coolant connections with each other
through neat compact plugs.
The compressor of the entire
unit is placed outside the house
like in the common split air
conditioner.

Out of the many social problems the two that are
addressed through this social campaign are
Shivering street dogs in the cold winters
specially in northern India.
Men urinating on the street side in public.
It is proposed that the street dogs of a particular
area be provided with winter jackets with social
messages on them.
The messages could be many but here
public urination is targeted.
It is observed that these dogs roam the
streets and if their jackets carried a message
about public urination it would embarrass
the men doing so.
It is intended to compare those men to the
dogs who urinate in public.

PE PPE R SPR AY BANG LE
Women in India and abroad are constantly at risk of
their safety. Pepper sprays are a good and effective
protective defense.
The problem with pepper sprays is the easy
accessibility.
Addressing this issues of women safety an ornamental
bangle is designed with a built in pepper spray.
The bangle has a clasp on it which can be broken
by pushing the ornamental studded protrusion.
When the clasp is broken it exposes a nozzle of
the pepper spray.
The nozzle should then be directed towards the
attacker and the bangle squeezed.
The pepper spray will be sprayed on the attacker.
This spray can be used only once.

All that is required is to place a small
adhesive receiver chip with beeper on a

The console can be wall mounted or placed on a

couch or sofa pillows.
Blank stickers are provided on which you can write

SOLAR POWE R PLUS R AIN WATE R HAR VE STING
In India the rainy season lasts from June to September; annual rainfall averages between 750–1,500
mm (30–59 in) across the region. Water harvesting on home and building roof-tops is thus a effective
source of water storage.
The annual average sunshine hours in India are around 2600 hours. Thus, solar panels can serve as a
viable power source for domestic and commercial use.
In order to exploit both natural resources and satisfy two important daily needs a canopy covering in
proposed for every roof top.
Thin film PV solar cells can be utilized on the curved canopy surface for maximum surface area and
the curved surface will also collect sufficient rain water.
This rain water can be stored for use during the arid summer season and the solar power can be
stored for the cloudy winter and monsoon season.
A new world record PV module based on the micromorph concept with 12.24% module efficiency was
independently certified in July 2014.
Taking the average surface area of a roof around 120 m^2 with the increased surface area due to the
curved canopy and the sun us shining at full strength (1000 W/m2)say with 12.24% efficiency we can
achieve up to 41,371 KW of power a year.

VOICE TO BR AILLE TAB
India is now home to the world's largest number of blind people. Of the 37
million people across the globe who are blind, over 15 million are from India.
Estimates, based on information gathered from community-based projects,
indicate that there could be more than 400,000 deafblind people in our
country. Overall we can predict that 0.04% of general population have
deafblindness as disability.
A concept tab is proposed that converts voice, speech in different languages
into Braille.
Intel in India is already working on text recognition of various native Indian
languages.
There are devices available to convert text into Braille. Taking that a step
further.
By using their work and developing sound to text conversion of the various
languages a device could be developed that allows spoken language to be
replicated in Braille.
