Introduction
Mental well-being is a vital part of a child’s development yet it is an area that has been neglected by the society at large. Nobelova
Gradani is set up to champion the advancement of the physical and psychological wellbeing of the Nigerian Child.
We are structured into three need bases developmental surveillance, school health and psychological
wellbeing.
1.0 Developmental Surveillance
Children are screened using proven occupation therapy techniques to determine their mental state and to
detect early, any risk of a developmental delay or disorder. Our aim is to ensure that children develop well
mentally. Early discovery of defects and prompt actions to treat them will increase the chance of a child
developing well both physically and mentally.
Developmental surveillance is a flexible, longitudinal, continuous, cumulative process that is broader than
screening; whereby knowledgeable professionals perform skilled observation on children throughout all
encounters during child healthcare (Doworkin 1993). It is the oversight of the physical, emotional and social
health of all children, measurement and recording physical growth, monitoring of developmental progress,
offering and arranging intervention where necessary, prevention of diseases by immunization and other means
and health education (Hall 1990).
Although developmental and behavioural disorders are increasingly widespread, they are still poorly
understood by most societies, especially African Societies. The lack of knowledge is further compounded by
the stigma that often accompanies a diagnosis of a developmental or behavioural disorder. Parents and
Physicians can educate themselves and others about the range of disorders, as well as the opportunities for
treatment and intervention if there was more awareness on the importance of having children screened.
Whether a child has a developmental delay or disorder, early identification and intervention are
essential for achieving the best possible outcome. Dr. Frederick B. Covington
The first three years of a child’s life are an amazing time of development and what happens during those years
stays with a child for a lifetime. That is why it is so important to watch for signs of delays in development and
to get help if problems are suspected. The sooner a delayed child gets early intervention, the better the
progress will be. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended the administration of standardized
screening tools targeted at the first 18 months of development to enhance the precision of development.

2.0 School Health
'' You cannot educate a child who is not healthy, and you cannotkeep a child healthy who is not educated." Dr. Jocelyn Elders
Nigerians are such ‘visual’ people (it is about what they see and conceive by sight); so if a child has no physical
impairment, such a child is presumed healthy. This, however, is not always the case. A child with Autism/
Emotional Social Disorder/ ADHD/ Speech disorder and Behavioural issues may look normal until later years.
Therefore it is important that schools practice School Health to provide early intervention strategies and
programmes for children identified as being at risk of literacy difficulties.
School Health Programmes helps early detection and intervention of educational underachievement. It
prepares students for the challenges of life outside the school environment. The programme also involves
Special Educational Needs Training for teachers as well as the administration of Educational Assessments.

Psychological wellbeing (Mental Health) as we all know it is a hard sell. However most Nigerians lack the

next human being because of your mind-set. Your mind determines who you are, your thinking, and your
ability to do well in your life endeavours and most importantly your emotions.

BRIEF PROFILE OF NOBELOVA GRADANI VISIONARY
Mrs. Helen Obiageli Oshikoya is the founder / CEO of Nobelova Gradani PsychoEducational
Services. A member of the Nigerian Bar Association since 1991 she holds a Master’s degree in Social
Science from the UK consisting of child development, clinical and learning assessments and other
areas of social sciences that require mental health expertise .She is also a Certified Autism Specialist
and a Specialist Assessor certified to perform Examination Access Arrangements.
"Great ideas come out of new perspectives. Helen Obiageli Oshikoya dreamt of a glamorous future as
an award winning actress on the world stage but one day something happened; on a visit to a mental
health facility centre she saw a mentally ill young boy eating off the floor. She was horrified not just
because of the awfulness of the situation but because the staff at the centre seemed resigned to it. By
this time she was already a qualified lawyer working for an international aviation company. She used
all her savings to ensure that she obtained high value certifications in mental health and without fear
she started up Nobelova Gradani PsychoEducational Services. (Noble Citizen) from the onset she
was determined that each child would receive only the best of care and treatment. In her words
"every child has a right to education in spite of their disability."
Starting out was difficult – there were very few trained professionals and lack of knowledge can
create powerful vested interests. Through a mixture of co-opting, resistance and collaboration she
was able to lay new frameworks for mental healthcare. There were moments of laughter, joy and
tears but those moments all served to strengthen her belief. Today Nobelova Gradani has 40 children
in its Early Intervention program, it is providing developmental screening/diagnosing for 6 private
and one public hospital and has 32 schools practicing school health. Nobelova Gradani is not
stopping. It intends to train over 100 Neurodevelopmental Specialist at a cost of over $170,000, 000.
