This campaign used innovative mobile strategies on MXit, South Africa's largest mobile social network, to engage youth in celebrating the World Cup. Participants shared "waves" by sending photos on MXit or MMS. The campaign communicated through dynamic MXit "flyers" rather than a static portal, and offered small daily prizes. Over 3,000 contacts were accumulated, with 52% of waves received through MXit and MMS. Interactions averaged 10 messages per conversation with 20-30 contacts daily. Feedback praised the initiative and called for future similar competitions.

3. The African Welcome programme called for us to engage the
youth of South Africa to celebrate the world coming to
Africa by joining the African Welcome Wave.
4. We asked participants to send us their waves:
Firstly by taking a
1 picture with their arms
to the side.
And lastly by taking
2 another picture with
their arms up.

6. MXit is South Africa¡¯s
LARGEST MOBILE SOCIAL NETWORK
The MXit application has a global registered
user base of 19.6 million

That makes MXit

Facebook in SA)

11. Making use of ¡°Status Updates¡±
Because MXit is an Application, the moment you exit the app, the contact
goes offline. By using status messages we were able to tell all our
contacts that we were not chatting and despite not chatting, contacts still
knew exactly what to do.
This became especially important during post ¡°office hours¡±

The text only portal provided by MXit proved
ineffective and participants were unable to click

13. Solution:
Because we know that MXit users are already sending

we followed this exact user process and built
