Ancient India made many scientific and mathematical contributions despite being separated by time and religion. Hindus had known the earth was round, called "Boogol" in Sanskrit, before the modern discovery. Ancient Indians also saw constellations like Ursa Major and recognized the double stars Mizar and Alcor, which they associated with celestial figures. Pi was encoded in Hindu devotional hymns. India had also invented zinc and developed an early process for extracting it through a furnace with a chimney and collection rod. Vasco da Gama followed an Indian trader from Zanzibar to discover the sea route to India.
