Topics to be discussed
Library as an Information System
Internet as massive source of
information
Collected , arranged and processed
hosted in and by Search Engines
Information arranged in its own way not
known to the users

Cont
The users search and retrieve his own
information
Sometimes at instant success, late or
slow success, partially success and even
no success or failure
Develop his own experience or gets
training to search and retrieved desired
information

Story speaks different story
Information is gathered in a specific way,
collected, and processed with definitive
tagging by the search engines
 Sometimes the desired information and
found and retrieved but very late and after
trying hard, which consumes time.

Subject tagging
Each information available in the
Internet is tagged in some way or
with use of certain techniques so
that people can search by the
same term and retrieve the
information.
February 16, 20177 NIRMAL KUMAR SWAIN
Key words
Difficult to know certain key words under
which the subjects are tagged. Still with
experience someone can develop a
consensus over the use of search term.
The search terms can not be full
tamed. The search engines use
hyperlink to take the users to different
locations.

Search techniques matters
Even with the use of search terms techniques
matters. What exactly the users want.
There are many search techniques. Most
popular is Boolean model which use AND,
NOT, OR for searching the Internet.
February 16, 20179 NIRMAL KUMAR SWAIN
Boolean
AND (narrows the search by retrieving only
records containing both keywords used in the
search statement)
OR (broadens your search by retrieving either
one or more of the keywords used in the
search statement)
NOT (excludes records containing the second
keyword in your search statement)
February 16, 201710 NIRMAL KUMAR SWAIN
The AND operator
AND links terms together in a way that makes
your search more narrow. It tells the computer
that you want records that contain all the words
you specify.
For instance, if you search only records
containing the words dog and cat, your
results will return only those articles containing
BOTH terms.
February 16, 201711 NIRMAL KUMAR SWAIN
AND
February 16, 201712 NIRMAL KUMAR SWAIN
The OR operator
OR broadens, or widens, your results.
For instance, a search on dog or cat will give
you records that not only have both dog and
cat in them, but also the records that contain
only dog and only cat.
Therefore, you will obtain more results by using
the OR operator.
February 16, 201713 NIRMAL KUMAR SWAIN
OR
The purple space represents all the records that
would be returned by the search "dog or cat."
February 16, 201714 NIRMAL KUMAR SWAIN
NOT
The purple spaces represent all the records that would be
returned by the search "dog not cat," and "cat not dog. Note
that dog not cat gives much different results that cat not
dog.
